Richmond is surrounded by water and it is very flat. For this reason it is protected by an extensive system of dykes that also provide recreational opportunities with many kilometers of trails along the tops of these dykes.
There are three main components to activity in Richmond. Residential is confined to the western portion. Agricultural is located on the eastern part. Commercial, though found throughout, 75% is located within 2 blocks on either side of No. 3 Road, the main street of Richmond and also along Bridgeport Road. Industrial activity is confined to pockets close to the Fraser River.
Richmond is a centre of ethnic diversity with a greater balance between residents of asian and european backgrounds than elsewhere in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley.
